Flatness in Coating Lines – A Shapeline Affair

The coating of steel and other metals with zinc (alloys) – galvanizing, tin, and plastic or paint in some form – are critical for the profitability of a steel works. Investment in a modern coating line is substantial. The speed of the material can be very high and the detrimental consequences of downtime or low quality of the produced material are therefore also very high. Customer requirements of the finished product are also placing new demands on the product delivered. New, high capacity, packaging and printing machines require better tinned qualities; the vehicle industry needs to improve fuel economy while maintaining high levels of safety; and aesthetic requirements on facades and roofs increases. Not only is it becoming increasingly important to know what you are delivering to your customers and to find means of directing different qualities of your products for different applications. But also to trace and track every individual coil or plate of finished material in case the receiving customer does not agree with you on the quality of the delivered product.

Shapeline has several reference installations in coating lines. Why? Because we have proven to be a reliable tool for both process control and quality assurance! With continuous flatness measurement covering the whole width and length of the material you will gain increased knowledge about the product you manufacture and the process you use to make it. Some customers use our systems to safeguard the electrodes of the electrolytic galvanizing bath – when the strip position is out of range or surface problems are too large, the line will slow down and increase the space between the electrodes. Other customers measure the crossbow profile to ensure that coating can be performed optimally, and trim the edges so that optimal conditions for the coating are achieved with a minimum of scrap. Input to tension levellers and anti-crossbow rolls are another common application for our systems. The use of the systems for quality assurance and documentation is discussed here.

Coating lines were one of the earliest applications for Shapeline systems. New investments in Germany and the United States required improved techniques for measurement and reporting of flatness and the Shapeline system fits hand in glove with these requirements. Improved coating, faster line tuning, more precise and consistent levelling is paying for the investment in the systems in very short time periods.

The product most often used in coating lines is the Shapeline Flex, the set of components used to make customized solutions dependent on material, customer requirements and available space. For strip up to 900 mm wide, Shapeline 500 standard set-up can be used.
