When in Finishing Lines – think Shapeline

The final step of production is to make your product ready for your customer. Through cutting, slitting and edge cutting, the dimensions required by your customers are set. Levelling is often a part of the finishing process to ensure that finished products have the required quality. We can also include treatment of the surface through blasting and painting and the marking of the final product into the activities performed at Finishing Lines.
Finishing Lines are not limited only to the large production facilities of steel makers. Every steel centre in the world is providing these services in some form catering for varying local requirements on delivered products. Quality Inspection and Control of the outgoing product is important – but this task is by no means unique for Finishing Lines and therefore we have chosen to gather applications within Quality Inspection on one page – please follow this link.
The role of Shapeline systems in Finishing Lines is threefold: As input to levelling, to optimize cutting/slitting operation and to document and certificate the delivered end product.
Levelling is core business for Shapeline. With a high quality flatness measurement system it is possible to define the standards for what qualifies as an accepted flatness of the delivered product, to communicate this to the operators, and to follow up the result of their work. We have applications where the loop between the measurement system and leveller is technically closed, making it possible to create an automatic levelling control system.
Increasing requirements on stronger, thicker and flatter material is necessitating new investments in more powerful levellers. With detailed, accurate and reliable information about the flatness of the end product, the start-up phase of a new leveller is substantially shortened – and customers have informed us that the money saved by bringing the new investment into operation sooner actually pays for the Shapeline system!
For some materials it is difficult to change a shape set in earlier process steps. But all is not lost. With the knowledge provided by the measurements from a Shapeline system – in the Finishing Line or from earlier production steps – the cutting or slitting of the product can be performed in such a way that varying customer requirements are met. The topographical and tolerance maps of the Shapeline systems are used to identify what parts of a strip or plate can be used to meet higher or lower requirements. Together with some customers, we have developed software tools to cut out daughter plates and create results based on virtual slitting.
To deliver the right quality to meet a specific requirement is very important. The ability to do that, with verification through protocols to your customers, and enable your marketing department to handle claims and returns with accurate information about the delivered product, are natural consequences of this. With a well designed logistics system you will, with the use of Shapeline systems for documentation, be equipped to achieve total accuracy in terms of deliveries, a happy, satisfied customer, and zero returns.
Depending on the material produced, several Shapeline products for cold applications are used in Finishing Lines. Shapeline Compact for narrow strip up to 100 mm, Shapeline 500 for widths up to 900 mm. Wider measurement areas can be achieved with the Shapeline Flex concept.
